Saco Island

The York Boiler and Engine House for the Saco-Biddeford Historic Mills District, was originally constructed in three phases, between 1880 and 1922. At one time the Mills District was one of the largest cotton mills complex in the country and employed over 9,000 people. Through company acquisitions and a looming economy, the York mills were closed in 1958.

Reborn as Saco Island Apartments, the mill building has been renovated into thirty-six multifamily apartments.

The adaptive re-use of this building has provided the heart of the city with thirty-six units of multi-family affordable housing overlooking the Saco River.
