About Portland Builders

What does a construction project involve? The simple answer is tradespeople, tools, materials, and equipment necessary to complete the planned work. But at Portland Builders, we know that true success requires much more: experience, anticipation, commitment, loyalty, and pride. These core values form the bedrock of our approach, ensuring every project stands on a strong foundation.

For 38 years, we’ve mastered the art of foreseeing and overcoming the inevitable challenges that arise during a project. This unparalleled expertise guarantees an exceptional experience for all stakeholders. But our greatest pride comes from knowing we’re part of something larger than ourselves. Together with our clients, we create affordable housing, generate opportunities for community members, preserve the history and culture of our towns, and help business owners bring their visions to life.

Our Story

Founded in November 1984 by Pat Cushman and Harvey Klugman, Portland Builders began as a Maine-based company specializing in custom homes along the coast of Cape Elizabeth. Quickly finding its niche, the company transitioned into multi-family and elder community housing construction. In 1988, Portland Builders completed its first occupied multi-family renovation for the Portland Housing Authority.

The mid-1990s marked a significant expansion under the leadership of William Cuddy and Joshua Cushman, who built upon the strong foundation laid by Pat and Harvey. Over the decades, Portland Builders has evolved into one of Maine’s leading Construction Managers for multi-family and historical restoration projects.

Jeremy Somes was introduced as Principal in the Fall of 2021, continuing the tradition of excellence and leadership.

Today, Portland Builders proudly maintains lasting relationships with clients throughout Maine and New Hampshire, celebrating a legacy of successful projects and long-standing accomplishments.
